First Class Funk is an indica-dominant hybrid strain derived from unique Cookies and Gelato varieties. It boasts a funky savoury aroma reminiscent of garlic and cheese, as well as extra-high THC levels. Keep reading to learn more about First Class Funk, its history, origins, effects, and more.
First Class Funk is a descendant of the almighty Gelato and Cookies genetic lines and was bred by none other than Chris Lynch—founder of Compound Genetics and creator of some of the world's most beloved modern cannabis strains. While Chris suffers from early-onset Parkinson's disease, he shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Since his years as a high school freshman, Chris has had a deep love for cannabis. However, his career has really taken off in recent years. Ever since he founded Compound Genetics in 2017, Chris Lynch created a long list of cannabis strains from unique crosses and meticulous pheno hunts.
Between 2017 and 2019, Chris worked with a lot of Gelato genetics, which were still fresh on the market and hadn't yet become as popular as they are now. After performing countless crosses using different Gelato varieties, Chris finally landed on Jet Fuel Gelato, a dank Gelato descendant with a strong, fuel-forward aroma, plenty of vigour, and a motivating, creative high. Jet Fuel Gelato quickly became one of Compound Genetics' flagship strains and was later used to create a long line of other hybrids, including First Class Funk.
First Class Funk comes from the culmination of Jet Fuel Gelato and GMO Cookies. Below we'll take a look at both of these strains in more detail.
Jet Fuel Gelato, as its name suggests, is a high-potency, ultra-gassy Gelato hybrid. Combining genetics from Jet Fuel (Aspen OG X High Country Diesel) and Gelato (GSC X Sherbet), Jet Fuel Gelato is a vigorous plant that produces super-dense spear-shaped flowers with a beautiful palette of bright green, dark purple, and blue-black hues.
Normally, Jet Fuel Gelato produces around 25% THC and a rich mix of terpenes that combine to produce a strong Diesel aroma with subtle floral hints and sweet lemon accents. Despite its strong THC levels, Jet Fuel Gelato delivers very well-balanced effects that are social, uplifting, creative, and focusing—ideal for morning or daytime use.
First Class Funk's second parent, GMO Cookies, couldn't be more different. Combining genetics from GSC and Chemdawg, GMO Cookies is known for producing dense, frosty indica flowers with an intense savoury aroma that combines a garlicky bite with earthy mushroom undertones and a pungent onion finish. Allegedly created by Mamiko Seeds in Spain, GMO Cookies also produces high concentrations of THC and terpenes and, while its effects are somewhat balanced in small doses, medium-to-large doses of GMO Cookies tend to leave users glued to the couch for hours on end.
First Class Funk is alleged to be slightly indica-dominant and preserves a variety of traits from its parents, including the tight bud structure and slight fruitiness of Jet Fuel Gelato, and the unmistakable garlicky nose of GMO Cookies.
In 2020, Compound Genetics dropped a limited number of First Class Funk Seeds. Reportedly, First Class Funk seeds produce medium-sized plants with a slight indica-dominance, which typically shines through in their tight bud structure, medium stature, and short internodal spacing.
Also typical of indicas and indica-dominant hybrids, First Class Funk plants tend to take on stunning dark colours towards the end of their flowering cycles. When grown in optimal conditions, First Class Funk plants produce dense, frosty flowers made of tight clusters of rounded green calyxes with dark green or purple tips, dotted with strands of bright orange pistils. Some First Class Funk Phenos may also turn completely purple.
Note that Premium Cultivars also sells First Class Funk in seed form. How this version compares to the original by Compound Genetics, however, isn't clear.
Like all strains created by Chris Lynch, First Class Funk is very strong and can produce intense THC concentrations of up to 27–35%. Its resinous flowers also pack a rich mix of terpenes, the most dominant of which include limonene, caryophyllene, and pinene. Together, these terps give First Class Funk a super funky aroma, which combines the dark, spiciness of old-school hash with sweet notes of berries and grapes and a unique garlicky kick obviously inherited from its GMO parent. First Class Funk's flavour is equally funky, with upfront earthy coffee flavours topped with strong notes of cheese and garlic. Some phenos also boast some light sweetness on the exhale.
With such high concentrations of THC and terpenes, it's no wonder that First Class Funk produces very strong effects. Immediately after inhaling this strain's pungent and full-bodied smoke, expect to feel an uplifting rush of short-lived euphoria that's quickly followed by a heavy head and body high. Your tolerance will dictate whether to use this strain during the day or in the evening. Experienced users with a high tolerance usually report that First Class Funk leaves them calm and relaxed, yet not sedated or lazy, allowing them enough energy to get on with work or other activities. Users with a lower tolerance, however, tend to report feeling deeply sedated and couch locked after smoking First Class Funk. The strain's warm, tingly body buzz also leaves many users feeling aroused.
First Class Funk is a favorite smoke among recreational users who enjoy the strain's relaxing, positive effects. Depending on your tolerance, rec users recommend using First Class Funk:
• Before bed
• While working at home or doing chores
• While watching movies or TV shows
• After a workout
• Together with your special someone
Medical marijuana patients also report using First Class Funk to relieve a variety of conditions and symptoms, including:
• Chronic pain
• ADHD
• Anxiety & stress
• Depression
• Migraines
• Insomnia and sleep issues
• Chronic inflammation
• Appetite loss
Given its potency, First Class Funk is best enjoyed in moderation. While experienced smokers with a high tolerance love this strain for its intense effects, less experienced users might experience some negative side effects when smoking First Class Funk, including:
• Anxiety
• Panic attacks
• Paranoia
• Extreme sedation
• Dry mouth and eyes
According to Compound Genetics, First Class Funk seeds produce stable and strong plants that boast vigorous vegetative growth and normally reach average heights. First Class Funk plants produce leaves of moderate size and with a typical hybrid shape. With medium-spaced internodes, this strain is fairly easy to manipulate and responds well to a variety of training techniques.
This cultivar is also known to be fairly resistant to pests and pathogens, as well as sub-par growing conditions. She performs very well indoors, taking around 10 weeks to finish flowering. During their bloom phase, First Class Funk plants like cool temperatures and take on beautiful colours ranging from golden yellow and orange to deep purple. Come harvest time, Compound Genetic’s First Class Funk plants boast long, heavy colas loaded with dense flowers covered in a frosty, sticky resin.
Note that Compound Genetics released a limited number of First Class Funk seeds in 2020. Today, seeds of this strain are extremely hard to come by. Hence, a lot of growers opt to grow Premium Cultivars' First Class Funk instead. While apparently derived from the same genetic lines, it's hard to tell just how closely Premium Cultivar’s version of this strain resembles the original by Compound Genetics.
First Class Funk is a high-potency cannabis strain that can produce up to 35% THC. Bred by Chris Lynch at Compound Genetics, the strain combines genetics from Jet Fuel Gelato and GMO Cookies, preserving the latter's uniquely funky savoury aroma. Loaded with cannabinoids and terpenes, First Class Funk delivers a strong and heavy high loved by experienced smokers and MMJ patients.
