"Seattle Greg" discovered a book titled: How To Grow Marijuana Indoors Under Lights by Murphy Stevens (1975). The book included a catalog in the back of the book that sold hydroponic cultivation equipment from a Seattle shop called “Indoor Sun Sales”. Greg went to the local hydroponic shop and befriended the owner and author Steve Murphy. As the years passed and their trust of one another grew, sometime around 1979, Steve gave Greg four seeds of an Afghan variety that he referred to as “Purest Indica” and that became the initial seeds that would go on to become the parents of the Northern Lights.
Steven Hager's description from his 'Inside Cannabis Castle' article published in High Times in March 1987:
State of the art indoor indica. Originating out of the Pacific Northwest, it is the result of many years of indoor breeding – three to four crops per year for a total of perhaps thirty to forty generations in the last ten years. The picture in Nevil's catalogue is a cutting of my personal favourite, C1 #5 F1. Unfortunately, no seeds are available of the strain, only cuttings. If anyone can come up with anything more resinous than this, I'd like to see it. Does not have much taste. The breeder bred a very specific goal in mind: high resin content. He certainly succeeded. The grass is a mellow indica that gets you pleasantly stoned – almost the opposite of Afghani #1. Although there are tastier varieties, I could smoke this one all day.
The most well known are Northern Lights #2 and #5 but there were lines numbered 1-11 with higher numbers being more sativa dominant. lower numbers like #1 and #2 were purest indica crosses to other newer aghan types. NL #5 is Purest Indica crossed with Hawaiian while higher numbers used Thai,Colombian or Mexican.
