Whistlin’ Diesel F4
I’d like to welcome you to the very first Night Owl Sour Diesel auto, another passion project of mine, Whistlin’ Diesel!
This is a line that I’ve wanted to make for a long, long time, but had to wait until the stars aligned to receive the AJ Sour Diesel cut. Here’s a bit of background on the project, followed by a write up on the F4 for release.
I had reached out to AJ back in 2017 to feel out his interest in collaborating on a project but (as with most photoperiod breeders that I reached out to back then) my messages were left on read, most likely dismissed due to the lingering stigma of poor quality autoflowers.
Fast forward to 2019. I found myself on a flight to San Francisco for the sole purpose of trading auto beans for clones with some of the most reputable names in the Bay Area. I showed up with what they had requested in trade and they showed up with about 30% of what they were supposed to bring, assuring me they’d get the rest to me down the road. Six years later I’ve chalked that up as a lesson learned, however a few good things did come out of that experience including the original AJ Sour Diesel clone from 2003.
After quarantine and a clean bill of health she made her way into flower alongside the Chem 91 and GMO, creating one of my stinkiest runs to date! I pollinated all three plants with the same Chemdogging male to create the F1 Photo x Auto and it was off to the races!
The first time running the F1’s I popped 30 beans and found some really cool fusions of the two parents, but didn’t find the stand out AJ Sour D female that I was looking for. It took a few months before I had the space available to properly run them again, this time popping 60 of the F1 to look through. In this second round I found a stellar female that was spot on to the clone only, with all the gassy diesel earthy funk that I was looking to pass on. The male I chose to use had a super gassy stem rub, stout structure, and dense flower formations making an ideal partner to create the F2 generation to begin the auto hunting process!
I stagger started the F2 generation, popping 100 seeds, waiting two weeks, then popping another 100. Instead of hunting for a male this time, I decided to make the F3 generation feminized in hopes of finding the AJ dominant autos more readily, for easier refinement down the line. I ended up using two auto reversals that carried on the Sour terp profile from the clone, and pollinated seven auto females (three pollinated by one reversal, the other four pollinated by the second reversal) so that I would have no shortage of options to choose from. From there it was down to smoke testing to determine my favorites out of the F2s, and popping the seeds from them to see how well the Sour profile translated into full auto. I was thoroughly impressed, to say the least!
Running the different F3 seed stock was a lot of fun, resulting in two clear standout seed lots, the #4 and #5. Both had the full on intensity of the AJ, but after the cure and sitting in jars for months one held on to the Sour vapors much more than the other, the #5. They both smoked incredibly, with similar flavors and effects, but there was just some extra layer and depth with the #5 lot that made it hard to put down. I found some other captivating expressions while running the F3 including some pink starburst mixed with diesel expressions, and something spot on to the classic Headband profile which I plan on exploring further in the future. It was around this time that I finally got to meet AJ in person and tell him how excited I was about the project and how well it was turning out. A few months later the F4 were ready! I usually have full confidence in releasing the F4 without further testing, knowing that my prior selections had been solid, but with all the lore and aura surrounding the world of Sours I decided to run them out before release just to be certain. They ended up being everything that I had imagined they could be at the start of the project, the flavors, aromas, and effects of the AJ Sour Diesel clone in autoflowering format!
I am tremendously proud to bring you this new offering and think a lot of people will appreciate the final results from these ladies! Here’s what you can expect from the F4 generation:
Medium to tall (3-4 feet in my setup) plants with sturdy branches that can support themselves until the final weeks of flower. Her growth is vigorous and the swell comes on strong! I highly recommend cleaning up the lower 1/3 of her branches and leaf tucking so that she can focus their energy on forming fat flowers. If the lowers are not getting ample light you may get a banana or two, which seems to be consistent amongst most original Sour genetics. I didn’t have any show in the F4 run that I did, but I was also diligent about cleaning up the lowers.
Her structure is fantastic, with side branches able to reach almost the same height as her main cola, and putting on the same weight. She is absolutely gorgeous to watch grow, with her foliage fading to yellow in warmer temperatures, purple and red with lower temperatures.
On the topic of temperature, Whistlin’ Diesel, like most Sours before her, really likes cooler temps in flower to preserve her terp profile in all of its glory. I like to start them off warmer, around 80 or so, then once I see trichs forming I start to lower the temperatures to around 70, and finish the last two weeks around 65 degrees.. There is something particularly volatile about the Sour terp make up that doesn’t seem to have the same impact with higher temperatures in flower. That’s not to say she isn’t fantastic in warmer temperatures, but I’ve found the ideal sweet spot to be high 60s to low 70s to really make her nose pop and bring out those super nostalgic Sour vibes!
Her flavor is predominantly gassy funk, with hints of pine and earthiness. No sweetness, no candy, just raw classic Sour that seems to become rarer everyday. Mouth coating, room reeking Sour Diesel goodness! These are some of the loudest autos I’ve ever grown. The effects are potent and uplifting, felt in the head almost immediately. It reminded me of how I felt smoking in high school, bringing giggle fits and huge smiles to everyone that has tried her. She also seems to have an ocular impact, making things brighter and more vibrant, accompanied by closed eye visuals.
Whistlin’ Diesel finishes in around 80 days from sprout, putting her right in the middle of typical auto harvest windows. I haven’t grown her to her full yield potential yet, but in bigger pots I have no doubts that she could she could reach 8+ ounces of dried flower. I like to be conservative in my estimates so I always say 2-4 ounces, but she has the potential to go full on beast mode and blow way past that!
Overall, I’m extremely pleased with the results and cannot wait to share them with you! Whistlin’ Diesel represents everything I love about the AJ Sour Diesel, captured in autoflowering format without compromise. If you’ve been waiting for that Sour funk, this is the one! Happy growing!
