Medicann have been actively breeding marijuana varieties for over 10 years now, the selection and breeding of high grade medicinal strains is at the core of our organisation, and our dedicated breeding team are constantly striving to increase potency, yield and medicinal benefits for all. New strains take many years to get off the ground, and the initial concept that a number of individuals may have from inception through to the completion of medicinal grade marijuana seed becoming available can be a lengthy process, of which no corners are cut.

It is vital that our breeders have a constant dialogue with our product development and dispensary staff and caregivers in order to determine the direction of a breeding programme. Of course, it is the feedback and knowledge of our patrons which ultimately determine what we breed, and their collaboration has been, and still is, vital.

Medicann medicinal marijuana seed breeders use both organic traditional breeding techniques and the study of biology at a molecular level to produce our strains. However, please note that we are GM-free here and as natural as an organisation can be.

Further plant breeding combines an element of science, inspiration and creativity. Medicann’s dedicated MMJ breeders use their understanding of a wide variety of botanical knowledge, as well as the genus cannabis plant. In fact, many of our staff are gifted with acclaimed horticultural grades. Another exciting positive about our breeders is their keen sense of commitment to the project, using their knowledge and intuition to continually develop new understandings relating to the world of cannabis genetics.

Here at Medicann, a breeding programme usually starts with screening a wide range of existing cultivars, and land race strains looking for plants with desirable characteristics. Individual plants showing certain desirable phenotypes are selected and then pollinated, this process is repeated over and over until a stable form of the phenotype that is required has been bred. It is a very long process and can take years before a new variety is released.

All of our breeding is carried out in the United States. However, selectors and breeders have travelled the world extensively for the selection of stock, including Asia, Africa and Europe.
