One of the plants was a keeper, and Alec gave a clone to his friend, Matt “Bubba” Berger. One of Matt’s friends noted that the dense, frosty buds looked like “kushberries,” and the group of friends began referring to the cut as “Kush.”

In 1996, Matt decided to get involved in the medical-cannabis industry. Armed with a clone of Kush, he moved to Silverlake, California, where he and a friend named Josh D. started a cannabis-growing operation. The Kush proved to be a big hit in California, and the two growers hastily expanded operations.
