Prempavee is a mother and an organic farmer from Esaan, Northeast of Thailand. Her farm is located in the heart of an area that during the 60s and 70s was the biggest producer of Thai Stick. Thai Stick is not a strain, as is usually assumed, but rather a way of tying ganja flowers around tiny sticks to facilitate transport and smuggling.
Thai Sticks are now out of the market due to more innovative modern techniques of preservation, but the landraces that were used to craft them still exist, and they are preserved by Prempavee and more than 2000 other farmers. The most commonly grown landrace there is the “Hang Krarork,” which means ‘Squirrel Tail’, followed by the “Hang Suea” ‘Tiger Tail’, the “Foitong” ‘Golden String’, Black Mango and more.
Prempavee is part of traditional farmer groups that, through the effort of entire villages, have been preserving these genetics for generations. Their seeds are from open pollination fields and present a truly complex variation of traits. These genetics have been used in the past by legendary breeders to increase terpenes, THC, and yield, and since legalization in Thailand has opened the doors to foreign varieties, traditional Thai sativas are becoming increasingly rare.
